the documentary
While America argues about homelessness, people die on the sidewalk. So Ken Craft (Founder/CEO of Hope the Mission) and Rowan Vansleve (President of Hope the Mission) do something impossible to ignore – they leave Santa Monica on bicycles with a promise to arrive in Washington D.C. Their goal? To raise money for new shelters and plead Congress for a simple request: a safe bed for anyone who needs one.
Across deserts, plains, and the Appalachians, Ken and Rowan collide with the crisis face to face: a survivor feeding her town from a tiny kitchen, Albuquerque’s civilian first-response teams, and families one paycheck from the street. Weather turns violent. Bodies break. Pneumonia slows them. Yet generosity keeps finding them at gas stations and county lines, and the ride keeps pulling them forward.

About us
In the past 16 years, Hope the Mission has grown into the largest rescue mission in the United States. From our humble beginnings in the San Fernando Valley, Hope has now expanded as far as Bakersfield to San Diego. Hope provides interim housing, warm meals, mental health services, and more to over 2,800 residents across our 33 shelters. And with Los Angeles’ homeless count starting to fall at its highest rate in 20 years, Hope is continuing its rapid expansion approach with no plans on slowing down.

The Crisis
No one ever expects it to happen to them, but homelessness in America is a nationwide issue that only seems to grow. In Los Angeles County alone, over 73,000 of our own community members don’t have a place to call home. And despite the various social, economic, and personal factors causing it, it’s becoming more apparent that many Americans are just one emergency away from homelessness.
This documentary sets out to destroy the misconception of the unhoused and to instead highlight the names, faces, and stories of those struggling.
